He rose through baseball scholarships and military school, attempted a coup, failed, went to prison—and then won power democratically, again and again, with more votes than any leader in Venezuelan history. He didn’t seize power. The people handed it to him, over and over, because he gave them something they’d never had before: dignity.

I saw him speak in 2009—not from a palace, but from the street, guitar in hand, quoting scripture and Marx in the same breath. I was there as part of a year-long academic program at Evergreen State College, but what I found wasn’t just a country—it was a movement. A society in motion, rewriting the rules of democracy from below. I witnessed an election with my own eyes: biometric verification, paper receipts, indelible ink on pinky fingers. Jimmy Carter called it “the best electoral system in the world.” I agree. It’s certainly better than the corrupt joke we have in the United States, where 95% of elections go to the candidate with the most money.

Fifteen years later, that same country is described in U.S. headlines as a “dictatorship,” a “narco-state,” a humanitarian disaster. What happened?

The truth is simpler than the propaganda: Venezuela became the ultimate threat—not because it collapsed, but because it dared to succeed on its own terms. By placing oil wealth in public hands, expanding voting rights, building communal power, and refusing to bow to Washington, it offered a living alternative to the neoliberal order. And for that, it has been punished with a quarter-century of sabotage, lies, and war by other means.

Now, on January 3, 2026, the mask has come off entirely.

U.S. bombs struck Fuerte Tiuna, La Guaira port, and radar installations across Caracas. Special forces stormed the presidential residence, dragged President Nicolás Maduro and First Lady Cilia Flores from their home, and flew them to a Brooklyn jail. Trump announced he would “run Venezuela” indefinitely. The Treasury Department seized $500 million in oil sales, deposited the proceeds in a Qatari bank under U.S. control, and declared that only U.S. manufacturers would be allowed to sell goods back to Venezuela.

This isn’t regime change. This is colonial extraction with digital ledgers.

And yet, even now, the core truth remains unchanged: Venezuela is the threat of a good example.

It’s not perfect. No revolution is. But it built free healthcare that served millions, eradicated illiteracy, housed the homeless, and enshrined participatory democracy in its 1999 Constitution. It stood with Cuba when the U.S. tried to starve the island into submission. It launched Petrocaribe to share oil with Caribbean neighbors instead of hoarding profits for elites. It said “no” to privatizing its oil—and paid the price in coups, sanctions, and now, kidnapping.

The U.S. doesn’t fear dictators. It fears democracies that serve their people.

Chávez knew this. In 2007, he told the U.S. people: “I have a dream.” Not of conquest, but of brotherhood. Of a world where sovereignty isn’t a privilege for the powerful, but a right for all nations.

Today, that dream is being held in a detention center in Brooklyn. But dreams don’t die in cages. They ignite movements.

And Venezuela is still standing.

Hugo Chávez was born in a mud hut.
